The Newfoundland dog is a powerful working breed with origins on the rugged island. Developed as early as the 1600s, these dogs were bred by fishermen to handle demanding coastal work including hauling nets and rescuing people. Their ancestry traces back to European working dogs. Over time, they became renowned for natural lifesaving instincts, possessing a thick water-resistant coat and webbed feet. One famous example is Seaman, who accompanied the Lewis and Clark Expedition across North America. Today, the Newfoundland is still regarded as one of the world’s finest water rescue dogs, deeply admired for its calm temperament and loyalty.
